GOOD CAUSES

Good Causes, Great Impact

Empowering change with confidence and purpose. Kate Hardcastle MBE has dedicated nearly three decades to philanthropy – championing causes that uplift others and inspire confidence. From instilling self-belief in young people to enabling consumers to live more sustainably, her outreach emphasizes empowerment at every turn. Her initiatives have reached over five million people worldwide and helped raise well over half a million pounds for charitable causes.

In all her social impact work, Kate leads with warmth, authenticity, and a conviction that when people are given the confidence and tools to succeed, amazing things happen. Below is an overview of Kate’s good causes, presented in reverse chronological order, followed by a look at earlier campaigns and “past friends” she has supported along the way.

Buy Smarter, Buy Greener (Founder, 2022–Present)

Kate is the founder of Buy Smarter, Buy Greener, a movement she launched in 2022 to empower consumers into what she calls “realistic environmentalism” – making affordable lifestyle changes that benefit both their families and the planet.

This not-for-profit platform provides clear, jargon-free guidance on sustainable living, covering everything from food waste and ethical fashion to eco-friendly travel. Backed by a volunteer team of expert contributors, Buy Smarter, Buy Greener offers practical tips and tools that help people make better choices for themselves and the environment.

In Kate’s words, if individuals feel powerless about going green, “the tiniest baby steps can make all the difference” when done together. The initiative has no commercial agenda – it’s driven purely by Kate’s passion for consumer education.

In 2023, she even took its message to the global stage at COP28 in the UAE, underscoring her commitment to sustainable progress. By encouraging everyday changes and highlighting positive innovations, Buy Smarter, Buy Greener is sparking a grassroots movement of more confident, conscious consumers.

The Fragrance Foundation (Board Director, 2023–Present)

In 2023, Kate joined the board of The Fragrance Foundation UK, the perfume industry body, to help steer its renewed vision. This role taps into her expertise in consumer insights and marketing. Kate sits alongside leaders from brands like Estée Lauder, Harrods and The Perfume Shop on a dynamic, multi-disciplinary board. Together, they have pledged to expand the love of fragrance and harness its transformative power through three strategic pillars – Education, Inspiration, and Celebration.

In practice, this means supporting event programming such as the trends and insights ‘Hot On The Scent’ helping make the world of fragrance more accessible and inclusive, inspiring creativity and well-being through scent, and celebrating excellence via initiatives like the annual Fragrance Foundation Awards.

Kate’s contributions focus on ensuring the consumer’s voice is heard offering rich insights on cross-sector opportunities from championing diversity in scent marketing to encouraging sustainable and ethical practices. Her involvement with The Fragrance Foundation reflects her broader ethos of using business expertise for social good, uniting an industry around positive change.

Access for All (Business Commitment, 2009–Present)

Making business a force for good. Early in her career, Kate pioneered “Access for All,” a commitment to give back 20% of her business’s time and resources to community causes . Through her consultancy, she instituted this award-winning model in 2009 and has since provided pro-bono support to charities, small businesses, and local projects that otherwise couldn’t afford expert help. In practice, Access for All has meant Kate and her team delivering free workshops, one-on-one consulting, and strategic advice to organizations in need. To date, over 1,000 charities, community groups and SMEs have benefited from these free advisory sessions from fledgling social enterprises needing marketing guidance to volunteer-led groups improving their customer service skills.

This initiative was even cited by Downing Street as a case study for the “Big Society”, highlighting it as an innovative example of business driving social value . By opening doors that are often closed due to budget constraints, Access for All lives up to its name: it democratises expertise. Kate’s belief is that no worthwhile cause should be held back for lack of professional support.

Over the years she has personally led hundreds of free training events and mentored community leaders, helping them amplify their impact. Access for All underlines Kate’s philosophy of “purposeful profit” – proving that successful business can and should directly contribute to the greater good, not as an afterthought but as a core part of its mission.

Choose Love (Supporter & Advisor - Present)

Kate has been a passionate supporter of Choose Love for the past decade – ever since the pioneering charity opened its first pop-up store for refugees. Choose Love (formerly Help Refugees) is renowned for its innovative retail model, where shoppers buy real items (blankets, tents, baby kits and more) as donations to displaced families.

Kate and her family have made it a personal tradition every Christmas to visit the Choose Love store and “choose” gifts on behalf of families they’ll never meet – an act Kate says helps ground the season in kindness and teaches her children that “generosity isn’t about excess, it’s about empathy”.

In 2024, Kate took on the role of Winter Retail Advisor for Choose Love, leveraging her retail expertise to expand the charity’s most ambitious pop-up yet: a multi-level “department store” in the heart of London’s Regent Street. She helped secure a prime location through a partnership with The Crown Estate, which was instrumental – the winter shop raised over $1.1 million in vital funds that season alone.

The impact of Choose Love’s work has been extraordinary: in its first 10 years, the movement supported more than 4.8 million refugees and displaced people across 41 countries, and distributed over 445,000 essential items ranging from food to clothing and medical supplies.

Kate often describes Choose Love’s flagship store as “retail at its most beautiful” – a place where unwanted stock finds new purpose and every purchase symbolizes care. She credits the charity’s army of volunteers and campaigners for proving that compassion and commerce can intersect to change lives.

Women in Sport, Women in Football and Women Support Trust (roles included Trustee, Ambassador and Advisor)

Kate’s work with Women in Sport (the national charity formerly known as the Women’s Sport & Fitness Foundation) further exemplifies her commitment to gender equality. In 2013 she served as a Trustee of this UK charity, which is dedicated to unlocking opportunities for women and girls in sport at every level.

Kate lent her business acumen and media savvy to several initiatives, and she also championed the charity’s outreach beyond London, which dovetailed with her founding of Women in Sport North. Kate’s colleagues have noted her ability to bridge the worlds of business and social cause: “Kate Hardcastle has supported [us] as an ambassador… she brings a fresh perspective and an infectious passion for change,” one Women in Sport director remarked. By the time she stepped down from the board in 2019, Women in Sport had expanded its reach and influence – thanks in part to advocates like Kate – and continues to drive forward with the message that sport is a field where women belong equally, as players, coaches, fans and leaders.

The Diana Award (Trustee, 2012–2022)

For a decade Kate sat on the board of this charity, which honours young people for social action in memory of Princess Diana.

She helped shape strategy for the Diana Award’s mentoring programs and annual ceremonies that celebrate youth trailblazers. During her tenure, thousands of young changemakers were recognized and supported through leadership development. “Kate is extremely dedicated to her work and helping others, and I cannot think of a better person who deserves such recognition,” said MP Craig Whittaker when she received a Prime Minister’s Points of Light award for her service.

Kate frequently hosted Diana Award events and championed its anti-bullying ambassadors, amplifying the charity’s message that young people can truly change the world.

RSPCA (Patron, 2009–2019)

An eternal animal lover, Kate served as Patron of the RSPCA’s Halifax, Huddersfield & Bradford District branch for 10 years.

In this role she was the public face of campaigns to promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership across the region. She fronted fundraising drives for new animal shelter facilities, appeared at community events with rescue pets, and even participated in the branch’s volunteer initiatives (from sponsored dog walks to shelter open days). Under her patronage the branch increased its profile and fundraising, which helped rescue and rehome countless animals. Though she modestly downplays her role, colleagues credit her with bringing “unprecedented media attention and business support” to the local RSPCA efforts.

To this day, Kate continues to support animal charities whenever she can, believing “our furry friends” deserve a voice and compassion.

Positive Image Campaign (Founder, 2012- 2022)

In November 2012, moved by the crisis of low self-esteem she saw among young people, Kate launched the Positive Image Campaign to inspire confidence in youth struggling with body image issues.

This initiative encourages professionals (especially women) to volunteer an hour at schools and colleges, delivering talks and workshops that challenge negative beauty ideals. Over the years, Positive Image grew into an international movement – expanding to schools in Australia and the UAE – and has reached more than 5,000 students with mentoring sessions, one-to-one coaching and events that promote self-worth over appearance.

The campaign gathered a network of ~50 volunteer mentors after Kate’s call to action. In 2015, Prime Minister David Cameron honored Kate as the UK’s 487th Points of Light for this work, praising her “fantastic initiative” and noting that her message of confidence and choice had “reached over 5,000 girls, offering them support at a crucial point in their lives”

The Positive Image Campaign, often using the tagline “Time to look beyond the mirror,” has empowered teens to pursue their dreams unencumbered by self-doubt. It remains one of Kate’s proudest achievements, demonstrating how a simple idea – asking people to give an hour of their time – can spark a nationwide wave of positivity and empowerment.

Endometriosis Awareness (Spokesperson, 2004–2012)

Having faced health challenges of her own, Kate became a vocal advocate for Endometriosis UK in her twenties, at a time when this painful condition was little-discussed. As a volunteer spokesperson and fundraiser, she bravely shared her personal story to help others understand endometriosis, which affects over 2 million women in the UK each year.

She organized awareness campaigns – including speaking at health conferences and contributing to women’s magazines – to urge for earlier diagnosis and better support for those suffering. Kate also helped raise funds (through charity balls and even a skydiving challenge) that went toward endometriosis research and support groups. Her efforts coincided with a shift in public awareness; today endometriosis is far more widely recognized, thanks to campaigners like Kate who refused to let women’s health be a hidden issue.

Although she stepped back in 2012, Kate continues to support women’s health charities and often encourages young women professionals to “never ignore what your body is telling you.” Her advocacy in this arena exemplifies her caring use of her platform to shed light on issues that matter.

“Business should leave more behind than numbers.”
